Fish Oil vs. Krill Oil
In the last decade or so, we have seen a huge rise in awareness about Omega 3 essential fatty acids and their many aids to health. You've likely also heard about two key players: fish oil and krill oil. Most of the studies have focused their research on supplemental fish oil, but in recent years, krill oil has emerged as a potential alternative. The question is: can we expect the same plethora of benefits from krill oil that we've come to expect from that of fish? The answer may surprise you! Dr. John Douillard, DC has written and produced numerous health and fitness books, CDs, and DVDs. He has been teaching and lecturing internationally for 25 years and publishes a free wellness video-newsletter filled with the latest studies and research. He was the Director of Player Development for the New Jersey Nets in the NBA and currently directs the LifeSpa- Ayurvedic Retreat Center in Boulder, CO, where he lives with his wife and six children.

Dr. Douillard, I have developed a seafood and fish allergy in my teen years and am wondering if purslane and flax seed oil are viable alternatives for omega 3s. Even better, if you know how to exorcise the allergy… Thank you much for your time and all the great videos you put together.

Yes, flax along w/most veggie oils are high in ALA which will convert to EPA and DHA, but inefficiently. It seems these veggie oils have a different mechanism of action than the EPA and DHA from fish oil as vegetarians typically have better cardiovascular health. There may be more research on this area that I am unaware of. As for the allergy, I would want to evaluate every aspect of your digestion to see if I can help. If you’re interested, we can set up a phone consult. Hope this helps!
